Pre-production began in March 2012. A particular emphasis was placed on storyboarding, as it became apparent very quickly that the film would need a myriad of shot types and techniques to convey the pace and style of the story. The artist Moose Allain began experimenting with transition illustrations to accentuate the scene structure and reflect some of the stylistic references within the script. Casting was overseen by Sally Wright and took place at Exmouth Community College, UK. Fin Parker from NBC Bird & Pest Solutions, an expert falconer, started advising on what capabilities the chosen falcon could showcase. Locations included the college and the nearby Woodbury Common.
